NAFDAC Seizes Bags Of Insecticide Treated Wheat In Nigeria

NAFDAC has seized bags of Insecticide-treated Wheat in Nigeria to protect the lives of wheat consumers.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control made this known in Gombe State.

In a statement released by the Gombe State NAFDAC Coordinator, James Agada, 80 bags of unhealthy wheat were seized.

Agada told newsmen that after processing the wheat, it was treated with insecticide. The insecticide or chemicals used for treating it were meant for planting.

He further explained that they are not healthy for public consumption.

Agada said with further investigation, they learned that a 32-year-old suspect, Adamu Hassan was involved.

They also discovered that Hasan sold a measure of the wheat at a discounted price to the public.

His words:

“One measure of this wheat goes between N200 to N300 and a measure of wheat in the market goes for over N1,000.

“The public were already consuming insecticide-treated wheat. This is something that is supposed to be planted in the farm, not for consumption.”

In a report obtained from NAN, Agada said the Anchor Borrower Programme of the CBN was printed on the bags of wheat.

The Gombe state NAFDAC boss said, still the wheat was sold at a discounted rate.

Agada revealed that investigation into the case was still ongoing.

He added that the suspect would be charged to court when the investigation ends.
