It earned the award after it was ranked top in:
- Best plant-based diet.
- Best heart-healthy diet.
- Best diabetes diet.
- Best diet for healthy eating.
- Easy-to-follow diet.
This diet encompasses a lot of dietary nutrients which includes;
- Protein.
- Carbohydrates.
- Fats.
The Mediterranean diet comprises meals from Greece, Spain, Italy and French. It was ranked according to usnews.com for its ability to:
- Achieving an active lifestyle.
- Weight control.
- Improve heart and brain health.
- Cancer prevention.
- Diabetes prevention and control.
This diet is particularly low in red meat, sugar and saturated fat. It is, however, high in produce, nuts and essential healthy foods.

For this, experts have assured that the diet helps to shed weight while avoiding chronic diseases.
Meanwhile, another diet known as the DASH diet came second in the ranking.
DASH diet attacks hypertension by eradicating the intake of salt.
The Flexitarian diet which came third encourages being a vegetarian. It, however, allows consumption of burgers as a cheat meal taking once in a while.
Why did the top three won?
The managing editor of health for US News & World Report, Gretel Schueller, revealed why they won.
In an email correspondence with CNN, she said the award was based on what can be eaten. These meals are especially useful for people, particularly during the pandemic.
Schueller explained that the winning diets make provision for occasional treats and wholesome nutrition.
“All the diets that perform well are safe, sensible and backed by sound science. The diet winners also all provide adequate calories with a focus on vegetables, fruits and whole grains. A modest amount of lean protein, dairy; and an occasional treat.”
What is a Mediterranean diet?
A Mediterranean Diet is a daily intake of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, herbs, spices, nuts and healthy fats. These fats are olive oil, twice-weekly servings of fish and seafood. Moderate portions of dairy food, eggs and occasional poultry and infrequent servings of red meats and sweets.

- Diabetes.
