In a chat with reporters in Geneva, Ghebreyesus said “2022 must be the year we end the pandemic”.

Speaking about the fourth wave in most parts of the world, the health agency noted:

“All of us want to spend time with friends and family. All of us want to get back to normal”.

He, however, noted that normalcy can be restored by first protecting ourselves. He emphasized the necessity of adhering to the COVID-19 protocols, especially during the Omicron variant surge.

The variant which was first reported in South Africa has spread across the globe in a few weeks.

This has further intensified the spread of the pandemic as it introduces a fourth wave.

Although the variant is said to be less severe than the Delta variant, it remains a dominant strain.
