Wellness Healthcare learnt that the management announced this update in a statement released on Sunday.
The NYSC said that corps members during their one-year mandatory service will be allowed to access free healthcare.
The statement explained that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), will oversee the cost of healthcare of all corps members.
It was obtained from PUNCH HealthWise that this statement was released after a corps member lamented about paying for her health challenges.
The corps member named Zahra Akomolafe recounted how she was made to pay her bills for an accident sustained on her way to NYSC camp in Enugu five years ago.

Akomolafe’s claim made the rounds because the Federal Government had approved the incorporation of the health insurance scheme into the NYSC scheme at the time of her accident.
Akomolafe said that the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Enugu treated her for free.
However, the cost of her post-surgery treatment was catered for by her parents.
She added that the NYSC was yet to make a refund to her parents.
The NYSC directorate has reacted to Akomolafe’s claim in a statement. The directorate maintained that the scheme was supportive of corps members involved in an accident.
It, however, announced that from February 11, NHIS enrollment of corps members will commence.

The statement read in parts:
“It is for that particular reason that the welfare of corps members remains topnotch, and a cardinal policy thrust of the National Youth Service Corps.
“It is apt to put on record that Corps Members get medical refunds for sums expended on health challenges. This scenario usually arises when the Scheme has not been apprised of a Corps Member’s medical issue and he goes ahead to spend out of his pocket.”
“As soon as the Corps Member applies and it’s verified, he gets paid.”
“For the reinforcement of this policy, and towards ensuring a more holistic and quicker medical intervention, all Corps Members have been enrolled under the nation’s National Health Insurance Scheme.
“The flag-off of this insurance scheme is slated for Friday, 11th February 2022.”
