Nigerian Nurses ranked third among foreign Nurses in the United Kingdom.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council in the UK revealed this.
In a report obtained from PUNCH, at least 15,049 nurses trained in Nigeria now practice in the United Kingdom.
This update was pulled in data collated from March 2017 to March 2021.
It was gathered that Nigeria ranks third among foreign nurse migrants to the UK. The first is the Philippines and the second India.
An update released on Tuesday by the NMC revealed this investigation about nurses in the UK.
The NMC supervises the registration of professionals eligible to practice in the UK.
It also investigates concerns about nurses, midwives and nursing associates.
The NMC said:
“The number of people on the permanent register in England who trained outside the European Economic Area continues to grow.
“As of March 2017, the body stated that 2,670 Nigerian nurses registered on the register.
“In March 2018, the body noted that 2,678 registered between March 2017 and March 2018.
“March 2019 saw a record of 2,771 while the number of nurses who registered between March 2019 and March 2020 increased to 3,205.
“Within this period, the body noted that it opened a temporary COVID-19 register to accommodate nurses willing to practise.”
It concluded that between March 2020 and March 2021 about 3,725 nurses were registered. Also, the statement added that they were granted licenses.
Health professionals in Nigeria have lamented the constant brain drain.
Over the years, the migration of medical doctors out of the countries has made headlines.
Observers also bemoaned the migration of specialized doctors exiting the country for a better work environment.
Amidst the lamentation, Resident Doctors have taken serious actions to fix the situation.
