Uche Edochie, the second son of Nollywood actor, Pete Edochie, took to his Instagram to explain his battle with COVID-19. The painter, who is the older brother of famed actor, Yul Edochie, narrated how he spent over 6 million Naira to treat the virus at an isolation treatment facility in Gbagada, Lagos State.
He explained that he had fallen sick a few weeks ago but attributed it to malaria so he spent the first few weeks treating himself for malaria. However, when he noticed his condition was not improving, he realized it may not be malaria.
“By the time I realised this could be something else, it was too late. By the time I was rushed to the hospital, eighty percent of my lungs were damaged.” Uche narrated. He explained how he was placed on oxygen for weeks and could neither walk, eat, nor breathe. He also mentioned experiencing severe chest pains.
“It felt like I was dying and waking up over and over again, I have never seen anything like this,” Uche said in his Instagram post.
The Nigerian Postwar and Contemporary painter described the feeling as having no control over anything. He equated it to feeling like he was on a “boat drifting away in the still of the night rudderless.” He stated that weeks passed by before he began to recover till he was fully recovered.
“I am fully cured of covid now and I can walk a little. My lungs will take months to heal completely. So I am still on oxygen and other medications but I am back home.” He said.
Uche broke down the cost of his treatment and how it was one of the reasons why people passed away due to the virus. He stayed in a facility that cost N350,000 a day and he was there for 12 days before he was moved to First Cardiology Centre in Ikoyi for my lung and heart rehabilitation. He estimated the total cost of his treatment to be over 6 million Naira. He called on the Government to invest in affordable treatments to save more lives.
Nigeria currently has a reported 203,081 cases of COVID-19 with 2,666 deaths. About 4,024,704 Nigerians have received one dose of the vaccine while 1,687,315 have been fully vaccinated.
