Lassa Fever In Nigeria: 79 Deaths, Infections In All States

Lassa Fever has killed at least 79 people and the disease has spread over Nigeria in 2021.

A situation report by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control revealed this.

The NCDC report also revealed that about 3,680 suspected cases were recorded since January 2021. The NCDC also confirmed that six health workers had been infected this year.

The monitoring body stated that 14 states had recorded one confirmed case across 60 LGAs.

The age range of protracted Lassa Fever cases in Nigeria is between age one to 70 years. However, data pulled confirmed age 29 to be the median. The predominant age group affected by the disease is between 21 to 30 years.

So far, six health workers had contracted the disease in 2021. NCDC added that the entire country was experiencing the outbreak.

The male to female ratio for the confirmed cases is 1: 0.8.

The monitoring disease agency said a notification of emergency alerts have been sent to various states.

Also, the NCDC said that bed space and patience have become inadequate for the management of the fever.

The COVID-19 pandemic is also a major hindrance to the control of the fever at the subnational level. It stated that it had sent an emergency alert to states to notify them of the outbreak.
