Meanwhile, the UK has announced the first Omicron variant-related COVID-19 death.

Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, said this on Monday, during a visit to a vaccination clinic in London.

The BBC reports that the Prime Minister urged British residents to take the Omicron Variant seriously.

He is quoted to have said, “Sadly yes, Omicron is producing hospitalisations and sadly at least one patient has been confirmed to have died with Omicron.

“So I think the idea that this is somehow a milder version of the virus. I think that’s something we need to set on one side and just recognise the sheer pace at which it accelerates through the population.”

Since the first cases were confirmed among South African and West African travellers, speculations about the variant started making the rounds.

Some health experts speculated that it is not as dangerous as the Delta Variant. However, some suggested that it is the most dangerous variant.

The treatment of the new strain which started in South Africa is being researched by the WHO.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said research is ongoing for this variant.

In an update released on Sunday, the WHO said the Omicron variant is being detected by the PCR.

“The widely-used PCR tests continue to detect infection, including infection with Omicron, as we have seen with other variants,” the update said.

“Studies are ongoing to determine whether there is any impact on other types of tests, including rapid antigen detection tests.”
