Nigeria and the Republic of Cuba would jointly produce various medicines. These include the production of vaccines, biotechnology development among other medicines.
The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu disclosed this.

Olu said in a press statement released on Monday, November 8 that there would be cooperation between both countries in the production of medicine.
The press statement titled ‘Nigeria/Cuba to deepen ties on STI development’ was distributed by a member of the ministry’s Press and PR team, Otuyemi Adetayo.
According to Onu, the Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Clara Polido-Escandell visited his office on Monday.

The statement read, “The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu has said that Nigeria and the Republic of Cuba will strengthen cooperation in the area of biotechnology development.”
It added, “Onu said that the relationship between both countries will include; i. research in vaccine production. ii. medicine production. ii. development of biotechnological materials.
“He added that the collaboration will be a mutually beneficial one.”
Onu also lauded Cuba for its relentless effort in the fight against COVID-19. He said that despite being a small country,
Cuba has thrived in the area of COVID-19 vaccine production. Onu also assured the country of Nigeria’s support. This is because Ciba has been slammed with international blockade and sanctions.

The Minister also advised the private sector to invest in scientific innovation. Onu said that Nigeria has the potential to be a “world” leader in scientific innovations. He advised the private sector to key into the production of STI vaccines.
