Dr Felix Adeyemi, a Nigerian optometrist, has advised adults to stop using contact lenses to avoid:

  • Conjunctivitis also known as pink eye.
  • Bacterial infections.

He made this known during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday.

What is Conjunctivitis?

The eye specialist defines Conjunctivitis as an infection of the outer membrane of the eyeball. Dr Adeyemi said that this condition affects the inner eyelids.

He explains further that this medical condition causes irritation or inflammation of the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is the white part of the eyeball.

The disease can be caused by an array of infections, such as:

  1. Bacterial.
  2. Viral.
  3. An allergy.

He also revealed that the condition is highly contagious. It spreads with eye contacts secretion from an infected person to other people.

Symptoms of Conjunctivitis

Dr Adeyemi listed three dominant symptoms of conjunctivitis and they are:

  1. Redness of the eyes.
  2. Itching of the eyes.
  3. Tearing of the eyes.

“It can also lead to discharge or crusting around the eyes,” he explained.

Dr Adeyemi warned against the use of contact lenses while sleeping and improper use of lenses. He said that it could lead to corneal scratches or tears.

“Build-up of dust or debris under the lens will also lead to scratches on the surface of the eye,’’ Adeyemi said.

Can contact lenses correct visions?

The doctor admitted that one of the best ways to correct poor vision is the use of contact lenses.
