See The Amazing Strategic Plan For Universal Health Coverage by NHIS In 2022

The NHIS has created a 10-year strategic plan for universal health coverage this year.

The plan dated 2022 to 2030 is to serve as a roadmap for achieving its set objectives.

Prof Mohammed Sambo, the executive secretary of the scheme disclosed this on Tuesday.

“The implementation of the plan has commenced with efforts aimed at the attainment of Universal Health Coverage in Nigeria, with a clear focus and milestones that could easily and accurately be tracked,” he said.

During a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Sambo spoke about the financial breaches spared in Nigeria.

He said when he resumed office in July 2019, he created a three-point rebranding agenda.

Sambo said this helped him reorient and re-strategize the core mandate of the scheme.

According to him, part of the transformation was to enable them to create a value system. This is to build a credible and result oriented organisation.

He explained that others were engendering transparency and accountability in the NHIS operation.

Sambo revealed that the scheme had employed relevant medical staff that was grossly low. 

He lamented that the scheme also embarked on capacity building for staff.

The executive secretary said the scheme has achieved the following:

• Aggressive and strategic capacity building for staff.
• A strong financial management system.
• Operational lapses.
• Prompt payment of health maintenance organisations.
• Prompt payment of healthcare providers(HCP).
• Less denial of service to enrollees.
• Prompt accreditation and re-accreditation of HMOs and HCPs.
• Better knowledge of enrollees’ rights and obligations.

He explained:

“We also addressed the delays in the issuance of referral codes by HMOs and poor treatment of enrollees by HCPs.”

According to Sambo, the scheme also developed a comprehensive digital technology infrastructure called the e-NHIS.

He revealed that the infrastructure was developed by NigComSat and its partners.

Thee-NHIS would enhance health insurance business processes in the country.

Sambo further revealed that the NHIS launched an innovation programme. The programme is titled Group Individual and Family Social Health Insurance Programme.

He continued:

“The programme was designed to bring the informal sector into health insurance, individuals, families, groups, associations and many others.

“Nigerians in the diaspora can also contribute to the programme.”

Another innovative platform established by the scheme is Under One Roof.

Under One Roof insurance is a platform that would bridge the efforts of all health insurance stakeholders. This leverages the NHIS through a common monitoring and evaluation framework to achieve universal health coverage.

Also, he said the scheme had spent N14.29 billion to benefit states under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund.

Other initiatives that were developed are:

• NHIS medicine supply initiative.
• Seven tertiary hospitals in Nigeria.
