She defined family planning as an informed decision by an individual or a couple. This decision helps plan how many children they want to have and when to have them.

“Families that have the number of children they can afford to train are able to devote more resources to providing them with adequate food, education, clothing, shelter and other necessities.

“There is no gainsaying that family planning enables women to pursue their: 1. educational and 2. career aspirations, acquire more wealth, and in the long run, contribute to the socio-economic development of their immediate communities,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Another dignitary at the event was the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi.

Speaking in line with the theme of the event: “A new Lagos, Family planning, a catalytic pillar for female empowerment and socio-economic development”, he drummed his support for contraception.

Abayomi upheld that every citizen should be conscious of family planning. He also maintained that Family planning is put on the front burner of public discourse.

He revealed the benefits of family planning from a 2018 research. According to the commissioner for health, the state has averted:

1. 167,000 unintended pregnancies.
2. 59,000 abortions and 3. 1,100 maternal deaths.

“Women who space their births can devote more time to pursue their educational and career aspirations, and, in the long run, accrue more resources.

“High fertility rates may hinder such opportunities for advancement, increase health risks for women, and lead to deterioration in the quality of life,” Abayomi concluded.
