Prioritise Your Mental Health, NMA Urges Nigerians.

Nigerians have been advised to safeguard their mental health due to the increasing economic challenges facing the country. This comes in the wake of rising suicide rates across the nation.

Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu, the Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association, emphasized the importance of emotional control for maintaining overall well-being. He expressed concern over the rapidly escalating cost of living and urged Nigerians to find ways to combat depression.

“We are in a period of heightened emotions, unrealistic expectations, and growing despair,” Dr. Olowojebutu stated. “It’s crucial to prioritize mental health as it directly impacts overall well-being. Neglecting mental health can lead to a decline in physical health.”

He recommended measures such as reducing unnecessary spending, avoiding negative news, engaging in hobbies, exercising regularly, seeking professional help, and maintaining a positive outlook.

While acknowledging the challenges faced by Nigerians, Dr. Olowojebutu also pointed out the government’s responsibility to protect citizens’ mental health through effective policies and border security.
