Physician Reveals One Real Tip That Helps Lupus Patients Live Long.

A Lagos Physician, Dr Hakeem Olaosebikan has revealed one tip that boosts Lupus Patients’ life.

Dr Olaosebikan, a Consultant Rheumatologist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital revealed this to newsmen.

Olaosebikan said not skipping medication can help patients live a long and normal life.

The physician who is also a lecturer, also revealed that they must also not miss regular basic follow-up visits.

According to the Rheumatologist, Lupus is a chronic medical condition that must be treated. He, however, emphasized that it is not a death sentence.

His words:

“It is a chronic lifelong medical condition, just like hypertension and diabetes, and patients will use drugs for life. Lupus is not a death sentence. It is not like cancer that we give an estimated life expectancy based on the stage of diagnosis.”

For a long, quality and normal life, the doctor recommended:

  • Early diagnosis.
  • Early initiation of lupus drugs.
  • Regular use of lupus drugs.
  • Regular follow up.
  • Clinic attendance.
  • Avoid triggers of lupus flares.
  • Avoid high calories and fatty foods

Other lifestyle changes that help Lupus patients are;

  • High intake of fruits.
  • Fish.
  • Fibres.
  • Vegetables and roughages.
  • Avoid smoking and taking alcohol.
  • Regular exercise.
  • Avoid excessive sunlight exposure and stress in any form.

He said an estimate of 80 to 90 persons with Lupus, live a normal life if they adhere to his recommendation.

Mayo Clinic describes Lupus as an autoimmune disease. It defines Lupus as a condition where the immune systems attack its own tissues and organs.

The attack causes inflammation which may affect any part of the body. These are; Joints, Skin, Kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs.

Causes

What causes lupus is still unknown. However, experts have linked the cause to a combination of genetics and the environment.

The physician further revealed the cause of critical conditions of patients with the condition.

He said undiagnosed and untreated lupus causes:

  • Organ malfunction and failures.
  • Reduction in blood supply to organs.
  • Clots in blood vessels or narrowing of blood vessels.
  • Constant dryness of the mouth leads to mouth ulcers.
  • Psychological problems.
  • Dryness of throat, eyes and skin.

Helping Lupus Patients

Is there a cure for Lupus?

Dr Olaosebikan emphasized that there is no cure for Lupus. However, good management of the symptoms is the best way to manage the infection.

His words: “Management of complications requires a multidisciplinary approach because many specialists are involved, preferably in a teaching hospital. Patients may need intensive care or high dependency ward admission, life-saving support like dialysis machine, oxygen support, blood products transfusion and highly intravenous drugs.”
