A new study has revealed the significant impact of 10 minutes of light exercise on the brain.

According to this research, just 10 minutes of light exercise can boost memory function.

36 healthy young adults were recruited for the study by researchers from two institutes.

The researchers who conducted the study are from:

  • University of California, Irvine.
  • The University of Tsukuba in Japan.

The brains of participants were studied after workout sessions. This showed a better connection between the hippocampal dentate gyrus and cortical areas. These points are linked to better cognitive and memory.

The results of the research were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

A project co-leader and UCI professor, Michael Yassa said:

The hippocampus is critical for the creation of new memories; it’s one of the first regions of the brain to deteriorate as we get older – and much more severely in Alzheimer’s disease.

“Improving the function of the hippocampus holds much promise for improving memory in everyday settings.”

Yassa who is also a Chancellor’s Fellow of neurobiology & behaviour admitted previous studies focused more on brain cell development through exercises, the new exercise demonstrates an in-depth impact on memory.

Yassa, who is also the director of UCI’s Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory said the impact is on strengthened communication between memory-focused parts of the brain.

His words: “We don’t discount the possibility that new cells are being born, but that’s a process that takes a bit longer to unfold.

“What we observed is that these 10-minute periods of exercise showed results immediately afterwards.”

Yassa emphasised that a tiny bit of physical activity can go a long way.

He said:

“It’s encouraging to see more people keeping track of their exercise habits by monitoring the number of steps they’re taking, for example.

“Even short walking breaks throughout the day may have considerable effects on improving memory and cognition.”
