NCDC Traces Monkeypox To Two States In Nigeria

Monkeypox has been traced to two states in Nigeria after a resident of the United Kingdom with the disease visited Nigeria.
It was obtained from PUNCH Health Wise that the person visited Delta and Lagos state during their time in the country.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) disclosed this in a statement released on Thursday.
According to the NCDC the patient spent 13 days in Nigeria before returning to the UK.
Confirming the case, the agency noted that the person arrived in Nigeria on April 20, 2022. The NCDC further said the person visited Lagos and Delta states during their time in Nigeria.
On May 3, 2022, the infected person departed Nigeria and arrived in the UK on 4th May, 2022.
The NCDC said:
“While in Nigeria, the case did not report being in contact with anyone with symptoms of monkeypox or other illness with rash. The diagnosis of monkeypox (West African clade) was confirmed by PCR in the UK on 6th May 2022. The patient is currently stable and receiving care in the UK.”
Tracing Monkeypox Contacts
The NCDC said investigation has commenced in collaboration with the Lagos and Delta State Health Ministries.
The NCDC added:
“In addition, the Monkeypox Technical Working Group comprising the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD), World Health Organisation (WHO), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), US Centers for Disease Control (US CDC) and coordinated by the NCDC is collaborating to strengthen in-country capacity to prevent, detect and respond to Monkeypox cases in the country.”

From September 2017 to April 30, 2022, a total of 558 cases were recorded in 22 states. There have been eight deaths.
In 2022 a total of 15 cases were confirmed.
Although, the cases recorded in 2022 is not enough to declare an outbreak but it is still a cause for concern.
The NCDC said the cases have been reported from states in the Southern region of Nigeria.
