With the emergence of the corona virus, death toll from the new coronavirus hits globally. So far, 80 people have been confirmed dead and 453 cases has been witnessed throughout China since the coronavirus disease was first diagnosed in Wuhan, the Chinese city with over 11 million inhabitants.

Nigeria is on red alert with China which is Africa’s biggest trading partner.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause disease in mammals and birds. Coronaviruses can cause illnesses that range from the common cold to much more severe illnesses like Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

What is a new coronavirus?

Medical Specialists have termed the disease a “novel” or “new coronavirus” (COVID-19) because this is the first outbreak in humans, as previously occurring between animals. The newly identified virus is thought to have spread to humans from wild animals and now spreading between individuals. Specialists assert the disease is able to spread from one person to another even before any actual signs appear. The coronavirus has a slow incubation period which makes it especially hard to contain. Experts still do not possess full knowledge of the severity of the new coronavirus.

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported in an earlier news that Nigeria lacks the required medical equipment to contain this new corona virus as a result of being its first occurrence. That is why, these are a few preventive measures to take at heart about the new Corona Virus.

Common signs of infections of this deadly disease include respiratory symptoms related to Fever, Cough, Shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent infection. The best way to do so is to avoid exposure to this virus. The NCDC recommends the following every day preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick and stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
