Jada Pinkett Smith has been dealing with a condition known as Alopecia Areata. One common fact about this condition is the sudden loss of hair. However, a lot of people do not understand the intricacies of this condition.
What is Alopecia Areata?
According to Web MD, this is an autoimmune disorder that causes the loss of hair. In most cases, the hair comes off in clumps, the size and shape of a quarter. The amount of hair loss is not the same for everyone. Some might lose a few while others a lot.
Experts have learned that females are more likely to experience this disorder than male. But, the reason for this remains unknown.

Four Facts About Alopecia Areata
Multiple health sources have said the disorder:
- Is not life-threatening.
- Does not inflict any physical pain.
- Is not curable.
- It is both environmental and genetic.
Jada who is a Hollywood actress and wife to Oscar-winning actor, Will Smith disclosed her status in 2018.
The 51-year-old, Red Table Talk host has been open about her struggles since she disclosed the condition.
She described her hair loss disorder as “terrifying” to handle.
“It was terrifying when it started,” Pinkett Smith said.
“I was in the shower one day and had just handfuls of hair in my hands and I was just like, ‘Oh my god, am I going bald?’
“It was one of those moments in my life where I was literally shaking in fear.”
On 28 December 2021, she decided to shave her hair completely. The actress revealed this on her Instagram page where she showed a bare line on her scalp.
She wrote: “Mama’s gonna have to take it down to the scalp so nobody thinks she got brain surgery or something.
“I and this alopecia are going to be friends … period!”

Meanwhile, a controversy was stirred at the 2022 Oscars after Chris Rock poked a joke about Jada’s baldness.
Rock who was the only male had said that he was excited to see her in a potential G.I. Jane Sequel. G.I Jane is famous for her baldness. Reacting to this joke, Will walked up to the stage and landed a heavy slap on Rock’s cheek, sending his face in an opposite direction. Smith walked back to his sit while Rock cheered on as many thought the action was staged. But, Will didn’t let the cheering hair before he said:
“Get my wife’s name out of you F****ing mouth.”
Both parties have apologized and admitted their wrongs.
