Police Sends Strong Message To Hospitals About Treating Gunshot Victims

Cases of deaths of victims of gunshots due to the request of police reports by doctors are against medical ethics – doctors.
The Lagos State Police Command has sent a strong message to medical doctors who make these requests.
The Command urged medical doctors to administer care to these victims before notifying the police.
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer in Lagos State said this in a tweet.
He wrote using his Twitter handle @benhundeyin:
“I am shocked to learn that a few doctors still request police reports before treating gunshot victims. Kindly provide immediate medical attention as stipulated by medical ethics. Then notify the police accordingly. One of our core mandates remains the protection of life.”

His statement is backed by the Compulsory Treatment and Care of Victims of Gunshots Act. This act states that any hospital both public or private shall accept and treat victims of gunshot wounds immediately.
The act also directed that gunshot victim be treated adequately without any initial monetary deposits.
Also, victims shall not be degraded or subjected to torture by any person or authority. This includes the police or other security agencies.
