Dr. Alakija Emphasizes The Need for Healthcare Insurance

Dr. Adetokunbo Alakija, the Chairman of the Lagos State Health Management Agency Board, has addressed the need for healthcare insurance. Punch reports that Alakija mentioned this during the agency’s customer appreciation event which was held earlier this week. Alakija mentioned that health insurance was key to ending the “out-of-pocket” payment which occurs when people visit the hospitals.

She stated that health is wealth, and therefore every resident in Lagos needed to cover their basic health care needs. She said covering basic health care was cheap, affordable, and could help prevent spending excess money when they needed treatment. She said the agency was trying to get more people on board and those who were already onboard would receive good healthcare at affordable prices.

Dr. Emmanuella Zamba, the General Manager of LASHMA,  expressed her happiness over the improvement in a short period of time. She also pointed out that the scheme had a lot to offer Lagosians as the state worked towards ensuring that everyone had access to quality and affordable healthcare.

“The taste of the pudding, they say is in the eating, unless and until you come and enjoy what we are enjoying inside Ilera Eko, you will not really understand what it can do in your life to improve your quality of life and your family.” She said.

“The beauty of social insurance is that we build a very big pool, everybody contributes something to it. Of course, it is not everyone that will be sick at the same time, but we’ve all contributed to the pool, and when any one of us needs the care, we can take from that pool of money and look after that person,” Zamba said.
